Windscribe is a VPN service built with a strong focus on security and privacy. It has military-grade AES-256 encryption, SHA-512 authentication, and a 4096-bit RSA key, making it one of the most secure VPNs around. With a strict no-logs policy, a built-in firewall, and features like Double Hop, it is one of the most popular and practical options out there.
Multiplatform and user-friendly
Windscribe offers its users a well-designed interface across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and browser extensions (Chrome, Firefox, Edge). It is truly a one-stop solution for all your VPN needs on all your devices regardless of whether you are on mobile or a computer. It is also an incredibly user-friendly product that includes an ad blocker, tracker blocker, and customizable firewall rules for enhanced security.
Domain blocking and manual configuration
With a tool like R.O.B.E.R.T. allowing users to block specific IPs, domains, or entire categories like gambling, adult content, and malware-infected sites, Windscribe is a fantastically equipped VPN service. Its config generators let advanced users set up VPN configurations on routers and other devices.
Additional features
While Windscribe offers pretty much all the features that other premium VPNs offer, its standout extras include the following:
- Proxy gateway: This allows users to create a local proxy server on the network, which is useful for sharing the connection with other devices such as gaming consoles and smart TVs.
- MAC spoofing: This changes your MAC address every time you connect through the VPN.
- Secure hotspot: This popular feature allows users to create a wireless hotspot using the VPN, ensuring everything is safe, secure, and anonymous for all connected devices.
Pricing
Windscribe’s free plan is one of the most generous options available on the market, especially when comparing VPNs available for Windows. It offers 10GB of data per month with unlimited connections available even on the free tier.
If you do want unlimited data, all locations (servers), a config generator, and R.O.B.E.R.T., you can upgrade to a paid plan. Pricing may vary depending on your region, platform (Android, iOS, desktop, etc.), and any ongoing promotions or discounts.
Speed and performance
Windscribe delivers decent speeds, but performance varies based on the server location and load. It does not impose bandwidth limits, ensuring smooth browsing, streaming, and peer-to-peer sharing. The WireGuard protocol significantly boosts speed and efficiency compared to older protocols like OpenVPN. While speeds are generally good for daily use, occasional congestion on free servers can lead to slowdowns. Paid users get access to optimized servers with better speeds and lower latency, making it a great choice for streaming and gaming.
A solid VPN with an excellent free plan
Windscribe VPN stands out due to its strong privacy features, customizable security settings, and flexible pricing options. Its free plan is one of the best in the industry, and the premium version offers strong security, streaming support, and a reliable server network. While speeds can be inconsistent, especially on free servers, it remains a great option for users prioritizing privacy and versatility.
